Magda Hinojosa

Dean, Liberal Arts & Social Sciences at Arizona State University

Magda Hinojosa is Dean of Social Sciences in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor in the School of Politics and Global Studies.

She is the author, with Miki Caul Kittilson, of Seeing Women, Strengthening Democracy: How Women in Politics Foster Connected Citizens (Oxford University Press, 2020). This work examines how the increased descriptive representation of women as legislators affects citizens' political engagement. The book draws on a panel survey of 1200 Uruguayans, funded by USAID, that was carried out before and after the implementation of a national gender quota.

Professor Hinojosa is also the author of Selecting Women, Electing Women: Political Representation and Candidate Selection in Latin America (Temple University Press, 2012). The fieldwork for that manuscript was funded by the Fulbright Foundation. Her work on the book was financed in part by a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. The book has been reviewed by The Journal of Politics, NACLA Report on the Americas, Latin American Politics & Society, and Choice, among others.
