Benjamin Shapiro is an accomplished professional in the fields of optics and bioengineering, currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Lumenuity, a high-tech optics company since December 2021. Shapiro co-founded xMD Diagnostics, Inc. in January 2015 and has been a board member since then. Prior to Lumenuity, Shapiro worked as the Chief Scientist of Control Systems at Kernel from June 2019 to November 2021, focusing on developing a non-invasive mind/body/machine interface aimed at enhancing human cognition. Benjamin Shapiro was a full professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland at College Park from June 2000 to August 2019, holding joint appointments in the Institute for Systems Research and Applied Mathematics, and previously worked in the Aerospace Engineering department. Shapiro earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Control and Dynamical Systems from Caltech between 1995 and 1999 and received a Bachelor of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1991 to 1995.
