John Kemp has a diverse background in research and academia. John started their career at Newcastle University as a Research Assistant from 2008 to 2009. John then joined Translational Research Institute Australia in 2013 as a Research Scientist, where they currently hold the position. In the same year, they also began working at The University of Queensland as a Postdoctoral Fellow until 2017. Following this, they took on the role of UQ Development Fellow and currently serves as an NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow starting from January 2020.

John Kemp completed their education with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Molecular Genetics from the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria in 2004. John then pursued a Master of Science degree in Plant Molecular Genetics from the same university, which they completed in 2007. In 2008, John attended Newcastle University to obtain a Master of Science degree in Medical Genetics. Finally, they went on to complete a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Molecular Genetics and Life-course Epidemiology from the University of Bristol in 2013.
