Derrec Becker has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Derrec started their career in 1997 as the Next Generation Reporter at WSPA-TV, News Channel 7, Spartanburg, SC. In 1998, they were elected as the State President of The National Beta Club, where they were responsible for coordinating state service projects and presiding over state conventions. In 2002, they worked as a Production Crew member at WLTX News 19, where they handled various duties in studio control and was responsible for the production of graphics for daily newscasts. From 2003 to 2008, Derrec worked as a Reporter at WOLO-TV, ABC Columbia News, where they were responsible for daily story generation, live on-scene reporting, and developing contacts with law enforcement agencies and government entities. Since 2008, Derrec has worked at the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, first as a Public Information Officer and currently as the Chief of Public Information & External Affairs. In their current role, they serve as one of the state's lead public information officers, delivering critical information during large-scale disasters, issuing news releases, conducting interviews, and facilitating media inquiries. Derrec is also responsible for educating and outreach to the public on personal preparedness and mitigation issues crucial for preparing for major disasters.
Derrec Becker obtained a Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of South Carolina, where they attended from 1999 to 2003. Prior to that, they attended Northwestern University in 1998 and 1999, taking undergraduate courses in Journalism. In 1994, Derrec obtained their High School Diploma from Clinton High School, graduating as part of the Class of '99. More recently, in 2018 and 2019, Derrec pursued a Master Public Information Officer degree in Crisis/Emergency/Disaster Management from the Emergency Management Institute. Additionally, they have engaged in Continuing Professional Development at the Emergency Management Institute, focusing on Emergency Public Information, Incident Command, Disaster Response, and Crisis Communications.
