Alaa Tartir, PhD, currently serves as the Director and Senior Researcher for the MENA Programme at SIPRI since December 2022. Alaa's extensive experience includes roles as Academic Coordinator for the Executive Master in Development Policies & Practices at the Geneva Graduate Institute, and Program Director and Policy Advisor at Al-Shabaka. Prior positions include Global Fellow at PRIO, Senior Researcher and Security Assessment Coordinator at the Small Arms Survey, and independent consulting since 2012. Alaa has held academic roles at reputable institutions such as Sciences Po and The London School of Economics. Educational qualifications include a PhD in International Development Studies from LSE and an MBA from Birzeit University, among other degrees.
