Nelson Cole began their career in 1977 as a Regional Operations Manager for Ford Motor Company. In 1983, they became the Owner of Nelson Cole Inc., a franchised new car and truck dealer. In this role, they managed all aspects of the business and its five department managers. In 1993, they were elected as a Representative for the North Carolina House of Representatives. Since 2011, they have been a volunteer business consultant for SCORE Consulting.

Nelson Cole attended the University of South Carolina from 1960 to 1962, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management, General. Prior to that, they attended Mitchell Community College from 1955 to 1957, where they earned an Associate of Arts in General Studies.
