Shelley Powers has extensive work experience in communications and editing. Shelley started their career in 1988 as the Managing Editor/Staff Writer for The Reflector, where they assisted the editor in deciding content and style. Shelley then worked as a Staff Writer for the West Jackson County Bureau at The Mississippi Press, where they wrote news and feature articles and interviewed various officials and individuals. In 1996, they joined Coast Magazine/Coast Business Journal as an Assistant Editor, responsible for generating ideas, researching, and writing articles. Shelley later worked as a Communications Specialist at the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, where they designed and wrote copy for the agency newsletter and coordinated programs and events. In 2002, they became the Public Relations Director at the Mississippi Arts Commission, handling media relations and maintaining the agency website. From 2005 to 2008, Shelley worked as a Curriculum Editor at JBHM Education Group, where they edited and laid out curriculum materials and designed marketing materials. Shelley then joined the Public Employee's Retirement System of Mississippi as the Communications Director in 2008, where they created a new Communications Department, redesigned agency media, and developed style guides and operating procedures. Overall, Shelley Powers has over 20 years of experience in communications, editing, and media relations.
Shelley Powers obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication with an emphasis in print journalism from Mississippi State University, from 1988 to 1992.
