Curtiss Murphy has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Curtiss started their career as an Associate Software Engineer at EDO Corporation in 1993 and later worked as the Director of Product Development at Appropriate Technologies, Inc. from 1994 to 2000. From 2000 to 2003, they served as a Software Development Manager at netdecisions.
In 2003, Murphy joined Alion Science and Technology as a Senior Project Engineer, where they eventually became a Technical Director. During their time at Alion, they grew from a software engineer into a recognized expert in game design. Curtiss published chapters in game-engine books, won awards as a speaker, author, and game designer, and led the development of the Navy's Damage Control Trainer, which received national recognition.
In 2011, Murphy founded Gigi Games as a creative outlet to improve their skills in business, public speaking, and Unity development. Curtiss published nine products and gained hundreds of thousands of users for their marriage, gratitude, and compliment apps. Curtiss also gave the yearly keynote for Lehigh College's Edugaming Workshop for four consecutive years on behalf of the National Science Foundation.
From 2014 to 2016, Murphy worked at Electronic Arts (EA) as a Lead Engineer but was affected by company-wide layoffs. In 2016, they joined MobilityWare as the VP of Engineering, where they led a shift from native iOS/Android development to Unity.
Since 2017, Murphy has been working as an Associate Professor at Laguna College of Art and Design, teaching Game Design Mechanics for the Master's of Fine Arts in Game Design program. In this role, they help students deconstruct existing games, design new games, and explore the art, science, and practice of game design mechanics.
From 1989 to 1992, Curtiss Murphy attended Virginia Tech, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.
