Sheldon Burns

VP Team Medical Services at Minnesota Timberwolves

Dr. Sheldon Burns enters his 32nd season as the Timberwolves’ medical director, and his 13th as Vice President, Team Medical Services. A physician at Edina Family Physicians, Allina, Dr. Burns has been a Board Certified Specialist in Family Practice, Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine. His duties with the Timberwolves include serving as team physician, coordinating medical care and assisting in other club medical matters. Burns is one of two team members that have been with the team since the inaugural season.

For his work with numerous NBA teams, Dr. Burns was named the National Basketball Trainers Association 2005 NBA Physician of the Year. Burns was most recently awarded the 2019 Jerry “Hawk” Rhea Award for Outstanding NFL Team Physician. He has served in various capacities in seven Olympic Games. He has headed up the medical staff of the United States Team in World University Games and been a Deputy Medical Commissioner in three Olympic Games. He has enjoyed having the special opportunity with USA Basketball to serve as the team physician for many WNBA/NBA players/coaches in World/ Olympic tournaments. Additionally, he has served as tournament physician for the Minnesota State High School League.

Dr. Burns is active in teaching sports medicine at Allina, Institute For Athletic Medicine, Tria, Twin City Orthopedics, and the University of Minnesota. He has lectured in four continents. In 2014 he was recognized as the Minnesota Family Physician of the Year and marked the 100th consecutive year his grandfather, aunt, and he have been family physicians to Minnesotans.

A native of Grand Meadow, Minn., he spends summers in Nisswa, Minn. Dr. Burns received his undergraduate degree from Hamline University and earned his medical degree in 1974 from the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Burns and Sharon reside in Edina, and together they have four daughters, a son, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. They enjoy traveling to see their grandchildren, greatgrandchild and friends around the world.
