Lawrence McGivney is the Managing Partner of MKC&I’s New York City office, and serves as legal counsel for clients in the hotel and hospitability industry. He currently directs the defense of cases that range from toxic torts, property damage, construction defects and ADA violations. In the area of toxic torts, Lawrence has developed an expertise in defending Legionnaires Disease claims, as well as injuries related to mold contamination. Early in his civil practice career, Lawrence’s primary duties focused on construction defect claims. He continues to represent a broad spectrum of construction industry clients ranging from multinational corporations who perform general contractor services on large scale projects as well as local New York and New Jersey based subcontractors performing regional work in the specialty areas of: concrete and masonry installations, underpinning, HVAC and roofing.
Lawrence is a successful trial attorney with over 60 verdicts in his career, and has argued cases before the Appellate Courts of New York and New Jersey. He has extensive experience in conducting lectures at in-house training seminars and industry conferences on legal issues, including the areas of: trial preparation and litigation techniques, Legionella contamination and defenses, as well as mold related claims.
Prior to joining MKCI, Lawrence spent 10 years as an Assistant Prosecutor in Mercer County, NJ where he rose to supervisory positions, serving as the Director of both the Insurance Fraud Prosecution Unit and the Environmental Claims Unit. He spent five years assigned to an undercover Special Investigations Unit. Lawrence also served as an instructor/lecturer for the Mercer County Police Chief’s Academy and the Trenton Police Academy.
In his spare time, Lawrence is an avid long distance athlete who competes in triathlons, cycling and road races. He enjoys hiking, fishing and kayaking. He is a licensed professional sports agent and represents players in the National Football League and the Canadian Football League.
Lawrence obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Fordham University School of Law, where he worked on the Environmental Law Journal and served as the Assistant Director of Bibilio Juris. He is a graduate of Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business Administration, and was recognized for his performance in the field of marketing and awarded the University’s Gold Medal Award of Excellence.
