Sarah Jane Forman is the General Counsel for KIPP DC. She has a wealth of experience in education law and policy, most recently, serving as the General Counsel for the Office of the State Superintendent for the District of Columbia. She began her service in DC Government as an appointee of Mayor Muriel Bowser in the position of Associate Director in the Mayor’s Office of Legal Counsel. She is an experienced litigator and law professor. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, a J.D. from Boston College Law School and a Master’s in Education Leadership from the Broad Center at the Yale School of Management. She began her legal career in the juvenile unit of the Boston public defender’s office before entering private criminal defense practice. She has taught both clinical and doctrinal courses at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis and Detroit Mercy Law School. At Detroit Mercy Law School, she created and directed a pro bono legal clinic serving children and families caught up in the school to prison pipeline. Her students engaged in traditional direct legal representation as well as innovative problem solving that often included a variety of tools, such as legislative advocacy, community organizing, coalition building and public education. She is a published scholar in the areas of criminal procedure, education policy and trial advocacy. She was selected as a fellow with the National Juvenile Justice Network’s Youth Justice Leadership Institute in 2011 and has served on non-profit boards for arts and education organizations. She is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia.
