Jonathan Cairns has a diverse work experience, starting from 2009. Jonathan began their career at Friend MTS Limited as a Software Engineer, where they built and maintained anti-piracy software and later became a technical lead for a web development project. In 2012, they joined 22 Blue as a Web Developer and introduced processes and automation to improve team efficiency. Jonathan then moved to Green Gorilla Apps as a Senior Web Developer, where they created large-scale bespoke web and mobile applications using Agile processes and test-driven development. Currently, they are employed at Intellum as a Software Engineering Manager, overseeing the development team and ensuring code quality and timely product delivery.

Jonathan Cairns has a strong educational background in physics. Between 2005 and 2009, they attended Durham University, where they obtained a bachelor's degree in physics (MPhys). Prior to that, from 1997 to 2005, they completed their secondary education at the Royal Grammar School Worcester, earning a Master of Physics degree. Apart from their formal education, Jonathan Cairns holds certification in Jira Fundamentals Badge, which they obtained from Atlassian in March 2023.
