Mary Ellen Smith has been an operations manager at the City of South Bend since 2004. Prior to that, they owned and operated their own retail store and mail-order business, Mary Ellen & Co. Timeless Treasures, from 1996 to 2004. During that time, they were responsible for all aspects of business management, including policy and procedure development and implementation, hiring and training of staff, public relations, media and press releases, office management, bookkeeping, accounts payable, checkbook register, event coordination, advertising and promotional literature design, printing services coordination, merchandise contracting, labor price negotiation, and internet and industry research. Additionally, they oversaw store layout and design, building remodel and maintenance contracting, buying trips for merchandise selection and purchasing, and inventory control and theft/loss prevention.

Ms. Smith has been active in their community throughout their career. Mary served on the Community Ambassador Committee for 1st Source Bank in Plymouth Region, IN from 2002 to 2004 and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Walkerton, IN from 1996 to 2002 (serving as Secretary in 2002) and North Liberty IN from 1996 to 2002. Mary also chaired the Holiday Stroll Committee for Downtown Merchants in North Liberty from 1996 to 2001. In recognition of their civic engagement and business excellence, Ms. Smith received the Business Civic Improvement Award from the Chamber of Commerce in Walkerton in 2003 and the Business Window Display Award from the Chamber of Commerce in North Liberty in 1996.
