Steve Sexton

EVP & Partner at Bmore Technology

In 1992 Steve graduated from Calvert Hall in the top 10% of his class and received the Villa Julie College (VJC, but now Stevenson University) Key Scholarship in recognition of his academic achievement. Throughout college Steve worked in the clubhouse at the Country Club of Maryland. During this time he developed a love for golf and still goes on annual golf trips with friends he met there. In 1996 he graduated from VJC with a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems. After being in the workforce for a year Steve decided to return to school for his Masters. In 1999 he received his Master of Business Administration, with a specialization in Management Information Systems, from the University of Baltimore’s Merrick School of Business.

In 1996 Steve started his career as a network technician with Upper Chesapeake Management Services Organization (MSO) where he had the good fortune to experience the full range of IT, including Windows and UNIX server administration, desktop and printer support, web development, and network infrastructure. Just as important, Steve experienced how a small business tries to balance budgetary constraints and keeping up with changing IT demands.

In 1998 Steve took a position as a government contractor at the United States Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM). Over the next 14 years Steve built his professional foundation as he progressed from technician to Deputy Site Manager. As the Deputy Site Manager he was responsible for managing a contract in excess of $10M and a team of over 60 people, comprised of technicians, engineers, developers, and requirements analysts. Steve used his Project Management Professional (PMP) training to organize and run projects for clients throughout the organization. These skills were truly on display during USACHPPM’s annual Force Health Protection Conference where Steve was responsible for the IT required to run the conference. This included weeks of preparation prior to the conference and ensuring all the equipment made it to the conference site, was setup, and deployed to over 40 conference rooms each day.

During his government tenure, Steve added to his knowledge of network security as he collaborated with government personnel to verify IT systems were compliant with changing government regulations. Steve still feels strongly about security and likes working with clients to strike a balance between security and productivity, so his clients can get the job done while keeping their clients’ data safe.

In October 2011, Steve put all his education and experience to work when they had the opportunity to purchase a book of business from a former employer. This purchase allowed Steve to dedicate his time to Bmore Technology on a full-time basis. The decision created some stressful situations for Steve and his family, but the timing felt right if he was going to make his dream of owning his own business come true. Steve puts in countless hours working both in and on the business, but has no regrets. He has been fortunate to meet several mentors along his journey who took him under their wing and taught him there are no shortcuts to becoming successful. It takes hard work and a willingness to continue learning every day.

Steve moved to Pawleys Island, SC in August 2015 to open their first office outside of Maryland. His role within the company has not changed and thanks to Skype for Business he is still able to communicate with the office and clients. Steve has enjoyed the change in climate and atmosphere as he expands their service operations.

Steve understands IT, he understands the challenges small businesses face, and he understands how to coordinate the two so IT serves as an asset, rather than an expense, to help a business of any size succeed.
