Philip Coan has a diverse and extensive background in medical biosciences. Philip began their career in 1999 as an Industrial Training Studentship at Unilever. In 2005, they were a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, where they managed multiple projects, trained and mentored junior researchers, and presented research findings at international conferences and for pre-reviewed journals. In 2008, they became a Scientific Litigation Analyst at Chadbourne & Parke (London) LLP, where they worked collaboratively in a transatlantic matrix environment and developed in-depth knowledge of epidemiology, disease mechanisms and clinical biomarker analysis. In 2012, they were a Postdoctoral Cardio-Metabolic Physiologist at Imperial College London. In 2014, they became a Principal Investigator and Senior Research Associate - Team Lead at the University of Edinburgh, where they discovered and characterised a novel preclinical model and identified potential new disease targets using multidisciplinary approaches, and was awarded independent funding to develop the model. In 2020, they were a Teaching Fellow in Medical Biosciences at Imperial College London. Most recently, in 2021, they became the Scientific Director at Freeline, where they lead the in vivo function to carry out PoC and PoP studies, advances preclinical programs, and supports clinical trials for AAV based gene therapy. Philip also supervises, mentors, and develops a team of 4 research scientists. In 2022, they will be a Research Project Leader at AviadoBio.
Philip Coan began their educational journey at the University of Leeds, where they obtained a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry with Medical Biochemistry (with Industrial Year) between 1997 and 2001. Philip then continued their studies at the University of Cambridge, earning a PhD in Physiology, Anatomy, and Epigenetics between 2002 and 2006. In October 2005, they obtained a UK Home Office Project & Personal License certification from the UK Home Office.
