Gavin Matthews has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Gavin began their career as a Software Engineer at EDS Shape Data in 1991, where they developed and maintained geometric software for CAD/CAM. Later, they joined Harlequin Limited as a Group Manager, ensuring the defect rate was below one per customer release and reducing the build and test cycle time.

In 1998, Gavin moved to Geodesic Systems, where they served as the Manager of Requirements and Customer Support. Here, they improved the performance and reliability of third-party software and implemented effective software processes.

From 2002 to 2005, Gavin worked as a Project Manager at Cycorp, managing multi-million dollar projects and leading interdisciplinary teams for the development of Cyc-based question-answering systems.

In 2005, Gavin joined NTENT (formerly known as Vertical Search Works, Convera, and Excalibur Technologies) as the Director, Semantic Architect, and Vice-President of Research. During their tenure, they originated core designs, managed and mentored teams, coordinated data science activities, and executed machine-learning projects. Gavin also played a pivotal role in the conversion of legacy knowledge representations towards RDF/SPARQL and the integration of data from third parties into a unified knowledge graph.

Following this, Gavin worked at Telepathy Labs as a Semantic Architect from 2019 to 2021. Here, they played a key role in the development of voice and natural-language interfaces for business data and analytics, including the design and development of knowledge management tools and processes. Gavin also coordinated between teams across multiple locations and time zones.

From 2021 to 2023, Gavin was a Senior Software Engineer at TuSimple, where they contributed to the development of autonomous, self-driving trucks. Gavin architected and developed new workflows for sampling and annotation from large-scale ROS logs and provided visibility and insight into production processes.

Currently, Gavin is employed as a Senior Software Engineer at ApertureData, commencing in 2023.

Gavin Matthews obtained a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Cambridge from 1988 to 1991. Prior to that, they attended Kelvinside Academy from 1977 to 1987, although no specific degree or field of study is provided for this period.
