Kevin Hughes began their career in 2008 as a Design Technician at MechWave Engineering Ltd. Kevin then worked as an Engineering Field Student at Encana Corporation in 2009, followed by an Engineering Intern at Barrick Gold Corporation in 2010. In 2011, they began working as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant at Queen's University, where they conducted research in the area of Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence. In 2013, they were a Google Summer of Code at Shogun Machine Learning and a Senior Software Developer and Software Developer at Shopify. Kevin then worked as a Freelance Software Consultant while traveling the world in 2018. Most recently, they have been a Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Aiven since 2022.

Kevin Hughes obtained a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Queen's University in 2007-2011. Kevin then completed a M.A.Sc. in Computer Engineering at Queen's University in 2011-2013. Kevin also completed courses in Computer Science at Athabasca University in 2010 and at Udacity and Coursera in 2011-2012.
