Prior to that, Shelly worked at NRG Energy as a Staff Attorney & Corporate Generalist from 2005 to 2009, drafting and negotiating various agreements related to power generation and energy services.
Shelly began their legal career as an Associate Counsel at Bracewell LLP from 2000 to 2002.

Shelly Buchman obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Spanish Language and Literature from The Ohio State University in the years 1990 to 1994. Shelly then went on to pursue their law studies at St. Mary's University School of Law from 1997 to 1998, although the specific degree obtained during this period is not provided. Shelly completed their Doctor of Law (J.D.) with cum laude honors at the University of Houston Law Center from 1998 to 2000.
