Shiang Yong Looi has a strong background in machine learning and deep learning engineering. They started their career as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Carnegie Mellon University in 2011. From there, they joined Schlumberger in 2012 as an Earth Modelling Geophysicist, where they applied deep learning techniques to seismic processing tasks and led teams in data processing projects. In 2017, they moved to Deep Sentinel and worked as a Deep Learning Engineer, developing computer vision and deep learning systems for video scene understanding. They also implemented techniques like knowledge distillation and model ensembling to improve model accuracy. After that, they joined Apple in 2018 as a Machine Learning Engineer, contributing their expertise in machine learning. Currently, they are working as a Geophysics Machine Learning Engineer at X, the moonshot factory.
Shiang Yong Looi obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Physics and Computational Science from the National University of Singapore between 2001 and 2005. Continuing their education, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics at Carnegie Mellon University from 2005 to 2011.
