Michael Roberts has extensive experience in international trade and development. Michael began their career in 1992 with the European Commission as a Stagiaire and expert. From 1995 to 1997, they worked as an Executive at the Food and Drink Federation, focusing on European and international trade policy issues. Michael then joined FOOD & AGRICULTURE INTERNATIONAL LTD as a Senior Consultant, where they provided trade policy advice to investors, government officials, and companies in Africa and Eastern Europe. Michael also worked as a Freelance Consultant from 1997 to 2001, undertaking EU- and UK-funded projects in Eastern Europe and Pakistan.
In 1999, they joined AFC Consulting Group AG as a Project Expert, working on agriculture and trade issues for an EU-funded TACIS project. This involved establishing a policy support unit in Moscow and collaborating with research institutes across the Commonwealth of Independent States.
In 2001, Michael started their career with the World Trade Organization as an Economic Affairs Officer, where they worked on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and served as Secretary to the dispute settlement panel for Japan Apples (DS245). Michael also established and led the growth of the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF). Later, they became the Head of the Aid for Trade Unit, overseeing the mobilization of development finance to improve the trade capacity of developing countries. In this role, they collaborated with colleagues in other divisions at the WTO and various external partners.
