Sonny Zhan currently serves as the External Submissions Lead and Patent Attorney at IBM, where responsibilities include preparing and prosecuting patent applications in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cognitive computing, and software security, while also contributing to best practices in high-volume, high-quality patent procurement. Prior experience includes a role as Corporate Counsel for Intellectual Property at Welch Allyn, where collaboration with research and business groups led to the development and protection of company innovations, as well as managing patent portfolios in software, electrical, and medical device technologies. Earlier positions include Patent Attorney at Merchant & Gould P.C., focusing on software, electrical, and mechanical technology, and various technical roles at Boston Scientific, culminating in the position of Senior Software Engineer. Sonny Zhan holds a JD, cum laude, in Intellectual Property Law from Mitchell Hamline School of Law and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
