Suzanne Kohin

Senior Research Scientist and Product Manager at Wildlife Computers

Suzanne Kohin has a wealth of experience in scientific research and product management. Suzanne began their career in 1991 as a Graduate and Postdoctoral Teaching and Research Assistant at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where they conducted research on the physiology and ontogeny of diving capacity in elephant seal pups. In 1998, they became a Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Fellow at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, where they conducted research on skeletal muscle function under low oxygen conditions and co-authored several papers on the effects of compounds and low oxygen conditions on muscle contractility and recovery. In 2002, they became a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and NOAA Fisheries, where they conducted tagging, tracking and ecological studies of sharks in southern California waters and co-authored a paper on the movements and behaviors of shortfin mako sharks in southern CA waters. From 2003 to 2017, they worked at NOAA Fisheries as a Supervisory Fisheries Biologist, leading a team of 5 federal and 14 contract scientists conducting research on fish and fisheries, overseeing a research budget of roughly $1M annually, and providing fisheries science and management leadership through domestic and international committee service. In 2018, they became a Senior Research Scientist and Product Manager at Wildlife Computers, and in 2017, they also became an Independent Scientist.

Suzanne Kohin obtained their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Math and French from Washington University in St. Louis. Suzanne then went on to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biology and Physiology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. After completing their PhD, they completed a Postdoc in Physiology and Marine Biology at UC San Diego. In 1992, they obtained their NAUI Research Diver certification.
