Mariana Silva

Principal Scientist at Vor Biopharma

Mariana Silva has a diverse work experience in the field of biomedical research. Mariana most recently worked as a Senior Scientist at Vor Biopharma starting in July 2022. Prior to that, they held the position of Scientist II at the same company from June 2021 to July 2022.

Before joining Vor Biopharma, Mariana was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital from January 2016 to June 2021. During their postdoctoral studies in the Sackstein Laboratory, they focused on investigating the role of the tetrassacharide, sialyl-Lewis X (sLeX), in skin tropic T-cells. Mariana'swork provided important insights into the polarization and chemokine response of sLeX-expressing T-cells.

Mariana also worked as a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School from January 2016 to June 2021. Mariana'sgraduate studies at NOVA Medical School - Faculdade de Ciências Médicas from September 2011 to January 2016 focused on developing strategies to enhance the efficacy of dendritic cell-based immunotherapies. Mariana'swork involved manipulating the cellular glycome of dendritic cells to improve tumor-specific cytotoxic immune responses.

During their PhD studies, Mariana was a Visiting PhD Student at Brigham and Women's Hospital from May 2013 to October 2015. Mariana'sresearch during this time focused on the molecular mechanisms underlying immune cell extravasation and cancer metastasis formation. Mariana gained valuable insights into the adhesion of leukocytes to vascular endothelium under hemodynamic shear conditions.

Mariana started their early career as a Master Student at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa - FCT NOVA from September 2009 to September 2011. Mariana'swork during this time centered around the role of aberrant glycosylation in cancer progression, with a specific focus on bladder cancer and the expression of sialylated tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens.

Overall, Mariana Silva has extensive experience in biomedical research, with a strong focus on immunology and cancer biology.

Mariana Silva's education history begins in 2006 when they obtained their Bachelor's degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from NOVA School of Science and Technology. Following this, they pursued a Master's degree in Molecular Genetics and Biomedicine at the same institution from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, Mariana enrolled at NOVA Medical School - Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Immunology and Glycobiology, which they completed in 2016. Additionally, Mariana spent two years, from 2013 to 2015, as a Visiting PhD Student at Harvard Medical School.
