Ryan Roper

Senior Software Engineer at Verantos

Ryan Roper has a diverse work experience spanning multiple roles and industries. Ryan is currently working as a Senior Software Engineer at Verantos since October 2021. Prior to this, Ryan worked as a Data Scientist at the Institute for Systems Biology from January 2020 to October 2021. In this role, they developed reusable PySpark code, tools, and resources to support EHR research at scale, optimized ETL solutions for machine learning model features, and created an EHR knowledge graph integrated into the NCATS Biomedical Translator as a web API accessible resource.

Before joining the Institute for Systems Biology, Ryan worked as a Simulation Engineer at GoldSim Technology Group LLC from August 2011 to January 2020. In this role, they focused on simulation engineering.

Ryan also has experience in academia, having worked as a Research Associate at the University of Washington Bioengineering from March 2009 to July 2011. Here, they developed a C/C++/Python module for ODE solver capability and performed software development tasks. Additionally, Ryan worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at the same institution from April 2004 to February 2009. During this time, they wrote R code to identify gene expression clusters and performed validation tests for a web-based model identifiability application.

Ryan's educational background includes a Graduate Student role at Brigham Young University from October 2001 to August 2003, where they focused on scientific programming for computational heat transfer modeling. Ryan also completed majors in Neuroscience and Mechanical Engineering as an Undergraduate Student at Brigham Young University with an overall GPA of 3.88 (Cum Laude).

Ryan Roper has an educational background in engineering and bioengineering. Ryan completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and Neuroscience at Brigham Young University from 1994 to 2002. Following that, they pursued a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University from 2002 to 2003. Afterward, Ryan obtained a second Master of Science degree in Bioengineering from the University of Washington between 2003 and 2009.

In addition to their formal education, Ryan has also obtained several certifications. Ryan completed various courses on Coursera, including "Convolutional Neural Networks," "Deep Learning Specialization," "Sequence Models," "Improving Deep Neural Networks: Hyperparameter tuning, Regularization and Optimization," "Neural Networks and Deep Learning," and "Structuring Machine Learning Projects." These certifications were obtained in July and August of 2018.
