Emily Mathews

Assistant Director, Experience & Engagement at VANCOUVER ISLAND REGIONAL LIBRARY

Emily Mathews has a diverse work experience in the library field. Emily started their career in 2004 at the West Vancouver Memorial Library, where they worked as a Public Services Assistant and Librarian Assistant II. Emily also took on roles in the Circulation Department and the Reference Department, gaining experience in various library tasks.

Emily then worked at the North Vancouver City Library as a Librarian - Auxiliary before joining the Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL). At VIRL, they held multiple roles, including Customer Services Librarian - Auxiliary and Customer Services Librarian - Children & Youth Services, where they provided leadership and support for various library initiatives. Emily later became the Divisional Manager, Collections & Support Services, overseeing the library's collections and support services. Emily'smost recent role at VIRL is Assistant Director, Experience & Engagement, where they lead the Public Services team in delivering exceptional customer service and develops programs and initiatives for the communities served.

In addition to their library work, Emily had other work experiences, including roles as a Student Assistant at Western University, a Technical Assistant at Aon Risk Services and MDA, an Inventory Assistant at The University of British Columbia, and a Community & Public Affairs Assistant at the Vancouver Police Department.

Emily Mathews has a diverse and extensive educational background. In 2006, they attended Capilano University for a University Transfer program with a focus on Art History. Following this, in 2008, they enrolled in Simon Fraser University, where they pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. From 2009 to 2011, Emily attended The University of British Columbia, where they completed their Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in History and minoring in Art History. Emily then took a break from their studies before returning to academia in 2012. During this time, they enrolled at Western University, where they earned their Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) degree in 2013. Most recently, in 2019 and 2020, Emily participated in the LLEAD Library Leadership Excellence & Development Program and obtained a Leadership Certificate, although the specific field of study is unknown.
