Alvaro Cortes, Ph.D., serves as the Vice President of Research and Practice Excellence at the Urban Institute since April 2023, focusing on strategic leadership, business development, and enhancing research quality through innovative methodologies. Prior to this role, Alvaro worked at Abt Associates from October 2001 to March 2023, holding various positions including Vice President and Director of Knowledge Management, where responsibilities included overseeing knowledge sharing strategies, and leading global platforms for technical innovations. Alvaro also served as Institutional Official and Corporate Quality Assurance Officer, ensuring research ethics and quality standards, and as Principal Associate, managing complex research projects. Alvaro's academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Urban Policy from Wayne State University.
