Alejandro Alvarez

Community School Director at Urban Arts Partnership

Alejandro Alvarez is the Community School Director at I.S. 528. Prior to their current position, they were a Teaching Fellow at Teach For America from 2013 to 2016. As a certified NYCDOE teacher, they carried out a three-year placement at Tech International Charter School in the Bronx, and Spring Creek Community School in East New York. With the support of with experienced faculty, they developed and implemented a Spanish Language/Global Citizenship course for 7th and 8th graders including curriculum map, quantitative/qualitative assessments, while pacing and lesson planning, using a variety of pedagogical resources, including the use of technology, media and community resources to foster Spanish language acquisition and a global perspective. Alejandro engaged in multiple professional development opportunities, including conferences, seminars, discussion groups, workshops, readings, and ‘learning teams’ experiences. Under their tenure, students went from 59% to 82% overall average mastery of content within the first year. Alejandro also developed and implemented a technology lab for 6th graders integrating digital citizenship content, coding skills and Google office tools to advance writing, storytelling and design skills using technology. Lastly, they developed and implemented an intercultural/humanitarian initiative for middle school students in partnership with UNICEF Teach, Reach the World and IFS-USA.

Alejandro Alvarez's educational career includes a certificate of advanced education leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education, a master's degree in education from Relay Graduate School of Education, and a master's degree in international affairs, management, and urban policy from the Graduate Programs in International Affairs at The New School. Alejandro also holds a bachelor's degree in international studies/journalism from the University of Iowa, with a minor in social psychology.
