James Seppi

Senior Software Engineer (Tech Lead) at Umbra

James Seppi has worked in the software engineering field for over 10 years. James began their career in 2007 as an Analyst Consultant at Accenture, where they developed components of a new international web platform for a major hotel corporation using Java EE and BEA Portal. In 2009, they became a Research Fellow at the Center for Research in Water Resources, The University of Texas at Austin, where they designed and implemented an open-source Python module for publishing hydrologic data using web service standards. In 2011, they became a Consultant/Partner at Coseppi Partnership, providing instrumental on-ground support for the Climate Adaptation in Mountain Basins in the Andean Region program. In 2012, they became the Lead Software Developer at TNRIS | Texas Water Development Board, developing websites for the organization. In 2016, they joined 18F as a Senior Software Engineer (Innovation Specialist, GS-15), serving as the engineering lead for Federalist, a static site platform for compliant federal government websites. In 2018, they became a Senior Software Engineer at Mapbox, working across the stack to optimize user-uploaded map icons, lead a large database migration, and design and implement a production-ready pilot for an internal authentication service. In 2021, they joined Umbra as a Senior Software Engineer (Tech Lead), designing and developing software systems that command, control, and communicate with Umbra's constellation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites via ground stations around the globe.

James Seppi obtained their BS in Computer Engineering and BA in Chinese from the University of Maryland between 2002 and 2007. In 2009, they earned their MS in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. In 2013, they obtained an Introduction to Data Science certification from Coursera.
