Luis J. Cano

Chief Information Officer at U.S. Census Bureau

Luis J. Cano currently serves as chief information officer (CIO) at the U.S. Census Bureau. As CIO, Cano focuses on providing secure and robust technology used by the Census Bureau’s many programs and surveys. He continues to lead efforts to transform the office of the CIO’s workforce to focus its technical resources to better answer questions about the nation’s people, places and economy. Previously, he was the chief of the Decennial Contracts Execution Office (DCEO) for the 2020 Census.

A senior executive with over 35 years of management and leadership experience at the Census Bureau, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) and U.S. Navy, Cano brings a wealth of technical leadership and operations experience to the Census Bureau. As DCEO chief, he was responsible for over three billion dollars of contracts supporting the 2020 Census. While serving as NOAA’s NWS director for the Office of Dissemination, he stood up the Office of Dissemination as part of NWS’ headquarters and budget restructure while improving dissemination services in support of NWS’ mission of protecting life and property. He also served as program manager of NOAA’s Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System (WCOSS), providing reliable supercomputers essential to the processing of sophisticated numerical models directly supporting NOAA’s environmental prediction product generation.

Cano is a U.S. Navy veteran. He has a bachelor’s degree in computer and information science from University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), a master’s in technology management from UMGC, a Chief Information Officer executive certificate, Federal Acquisition Certification for Program and Project Managers (FAC-P/PM)-Level III and is a certified project management professional.
