Niklas Hilmes started their work experience in 2011 as a Projektassistent at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. In 2012, they joined ZF Group for a Master's thesis and worked until 2013. After that, they worked at TÜV NORD GROUP, where they held various roles such as Deputy Head Of Department Machinery Components, Expert Wind Turbine Drive Train Components, and Project Manager Site Specific Suitability.

Niklas Hilmes holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Maschinenbau from Ruhr University Bochum, which they earned from 2007 to 2011. Niklas further pursued their education at the same institution and obtained a Master of Science degree in Maschinenbau from 2011 to 2013.
