Achala Fernando has a diverse range of work experience, starting in 2014 as a Student Researcher at Niigata University. They then worked as a Medical Laboratory Technician at Suhada Medical Laboratory in Sri Lanka from 2015 to 2016. Following this, Achala served as a Demonstrator at the University of Peradeniya in 2016. They then transitioned to become a University Lecturer at the Open University of Sri Lanka, where they worked from 2016 to 2018. In 2018, Achala worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Auckland for a brief period of three months. From 2019 onwards, they joined the Translational Research Institute Australia as a Researcher PhD Student. Their most recent position is with The University of Queensland, where they began working in 2020. Initially, they served as a Young Science Ambassador for the Wonder of Science program. They later became a Research Assistant, a position they held until April 2021.
Achala Fernando has a diverse education history. Achala started their undergraduate studies at the University of Peradeniya in 2011 and completed their Bachelor's degree in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science/Research and Allied Professions in 2016. During their time at the University of Peradeniya, they also engaged in undergraduate research in brain imaging at the Health sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Niigata University from 2014 to 2015.
Following their undergraduate studies, Achala pursued further education by obtaining a Master's degree in Research in Science from The University of Auckland in 2018. Subsequently, they obtained certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist from the Medical Council of Sri Lanka in February 2017.
Continuing their academic journey, Achala enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in 2019. Achala'sresearch focus during their PhD program is on prostate cancer.
