Michael Carlson has worked in various engineering roles throughout their career. Michael began their career at Irwin Magnetics in 1986, where they worked as an Engineer until 1993. In 1999, they joined FTSS as an Engineer and stayed with the company until 2009. From 2009, they became the President of Mechdesign, Inc. and held the role until the present. In 2013, they joined The Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research as a Senior Design Engineer, where they worked until 2016. Currently, they are a Senior Design Engineer at Transportation Research Center Inc.

Michael Carlson obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, which they completed between 1981 and 1985. Prior to that, they pursued their Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame from 1976 to 1980.
