Martijn Van Iersel has a diverse work experience in various fields such as bioinformatics and game development. Martijn started their career as an MSc Intern at the University of Eastern Finland in 2002. Martijn then moved on to work as an MSc Major thesis researcher at the Department of Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology, UC Santa Barbara in 2003. In 2004, they worked as a Phd Researcher at the Hubrecht Institute, Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research until 2005. Martijn then pursued a PhD researcher role at Maastricht University from 2005 to 2010, specializing in pathway visualization and analysis and developing open-source bioinformatics applications. Martijn continued their work at Maastricht as a Postdoc for the Netherlands Consortium of Systems Biology from 2010 to 2011. Martijn then joined EBI as a Post-doc from 2011 to 2012. After that, they worked as a Bioinformatics Consultant at General Bioinformatics from 2012 to 2016. In 2016, Martijn took on two simultaneous roles - one as a Developer at TOPdesk and another as a part-time Game Developer at helixsoft.nl, where they are currently employed.
Martijn Van Iersel completed their undergraduate education at Wageningen University & Research from 1997 to 2003. Martijn earned a Master's degree in Molecular Sciences during this period. Additionally, in February 2021, Martijn obtained a certification in Elements of AI from the University of Helsinki and Reaktor.
