Joshua Funk

Artistic Director at The Second City

Joshua Funk has a diverse work experience in the entertainment industry. Joshua started their career at The Second City in 2001, where they developed and directed multiple revues, earning awards for "Best Director" and "Best Revue." Joshua also led Second City's first comedy tour of Asia and first USO tour of the Balkans.

Funk later joined MTV Networks/Logo as an Improv Director for "Wild n' Out," where they assisted in developing the show and trained and mentored comedians, improvisers, and actors.

In 2005, they co-founded Planet Ant Theatre in Detroit, where they structured a program using collaborative improvisation to create narrative comedic plays.

Funk then joined The Second City again in 2009, this time as the Artistic Director. Joshua developed and restructured the curriculum for The Second City Training Center, leading to a significant increase in student enrollment. Joshua also served as the Vice President of Television Development and New Media, creating an online presence for The Second City brand and developing television scripts and pitches.

In 2012, Funk worked as a Director and Musical Director for Jim Belushi and the Board of Comedy's live touring show and as a Music Composer for Comedy Central's Key & Peele.

Throughout their career, Funk has received numerous accolades, including a 2014 Emmy nomination for their musical compositions for Key & Peele and a Joseph Jefferson award for their directing work at The Second City.

Joshua Funk attended the University of Michigan from 1992 to 1995, where they earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Musical Theatre.
