RJ Mickelson is an accomplished photo editor with extensive experience in the field of photojournalism. Currently serving as Photo Editor for The San Francisco Standard since May 2022, RJ previously held the same position at the San Francisco Chronicle and SFGATE from September 2016 to May 2022, where responsibilities included managing the photo desk, collaborating on sports features, overseeing social media content, and developing enterprise photo projects. Prior roles include serving as Photo Editor at The National, where RJ managed assignments and led innovative photo projects, and as Director of Photography at amNewYork, overseeing photo bookings and launching an internship program. Additionally, RJ's background includes significant freelance work and leadership roles in photography collectives, establishing a strong foundation in both creative and operational aspects of journalism. RJ holds a Certificate in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the International Center of Photography and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
