Phil Powers has extensive experience in the outdoor and education industry. Phil is currently the President of The Mountain Guides, a position they started in November 2021. Prior to this, they served as a Board Member for Ascend: Leadership Through Athletics starting in October 2020. Phil also has a background in guiding, having been the Owner/Guide of Jackson Hole Mountain Guides since September 1997.
In terms of leadership roles, Phil was the CEO of the American Alpine Club from May 2005 to August 2020. Phil also held the position of President for the American Mountain Guides Association from 1995 to 2001. Additionally, they served as the Director of Access Fund from January 1997 to January 2000.
Phil's experience in academia includes their tenure as the Vice President of Naropa University from January 2000 to January 2005. Phil was responsible for fundraising, trustee cultivation, and new program development.
Earlier in their career, Phil had various roles at the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Phil served as the Development and Partnerships Director from January 1995 to January 1999, where they oversaw the development, alumni relations, and ecological research departments. Phil also played a key role in establishing the Professional Training Institute, raising funds for the school's endowment, and increasing annual giving. Phil taught NOLS courses as an Instructor for over 15 years, and they served as the Chief Mountaineering Instructor from January 1990 to January 1995.
Throughout their career, Phil has demonstrated a passion for outdoor education, leadership, and advocacy within the industry.
Phil Powers earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Hobart and William Smith Colleges from 1979 to 1983. Phil later pursued studies in psychoanalytically informed spirituality at the University of Colorado Boulder from 1987 to 1988. In addition, they obtained a certification as a Certified Rock Guide from the American Mountain Guides Association in 1998.
