Lukas Hewing

Principal GNC Algorithms Engineer at The Exploration Company

Lukas Hewing has a diverse work experience in the field of control engineering. Lukas started their career as a Doctoral Student at ETH Zürich, where they conducted research on stochastic and learning-based predictive control. Lukas specifically focused on safety properties and applied their methodology to an autonomous race car. Lukas also collaborated with industry partners on data-driven analysis and control for automated diamond coring. After completing their doctoral studies, Lukas worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher and then as a Lecturer at ETH Zürich.

In 2021, Lukas joined SENER Aeroespacial as an Advanced Control and GNC Research Engineer. In this role, they led the AI4GNC project, exploring and developing AI and data-driven techniques for GNC systems. Lukas also played a key role in optimization activities for guidance and predictive control, as well as carrying out robust controller synthesis and analysis for various AOCS/GNC applications.

Most recently, Lukas has taken up the position of Senior GNC Engineer at The Exploration Company in 2023.

Lukas Hewing completed their education in a chronological order. Lukas started their academic journey in 2009 at RWTH Aachen University, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering. Lukas successfully completed this program in 2013.

Following their bachelor's degree, Lukas went on to enroll at RWTH Aachen University for their Master of Science (MS) degree in Automation Engineering. Lukas attended this program from 2013 to 2015, acquiring knowledge and skills in the field.

Looking to further enhance their education, Lukas Hewing joined ETH Zürich in 2016 for a Doctorate (PhD) degree in Control Engineering. Lukas spent four years at ETH Zürich, focusing on their research and working towards their doctorate. Lukas completed their PhD program in 2020.

In summary, Lukas Hewing pursued a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University from 2009 to 2013. Lukas then completed their Master's degree in Automation Engineering from 2013 to 2015, also at RWTH Aachen University. Finally, Lukas pursued their passion for research and earned their Doctorate (PhD) in Control Engineering at ETH Zürich from 2016 to 2020.
