Matthias Bucher has a diverse work experience in the energy and academic sectors. Matthias is currently serving as the Head of R&D at Swissgrid AG, a position they have held since 2023. Prior to this role, they worked as the Head of Market & System Design from 2019 to 2023, and as a Specialist in Economics & Market Design from 2018 to 2018. Matthias also held positions as a Specialist in Markets Development and TSO Markets Development at Swissgrid AG from 2016 to 2018 and 2017 to 2017, respectively. Additionally, Matthias Bucher worked as a Dozent at Fachhochschule Graubünden from 2020 onwards. Matthias has academic experience as a PostDoc at ETH Zurich from 2016 to 2016 and as a PhD Student from 2011 to 2016. Early in their career, they completed a Praktikum at Swissgrid AG from 2009 to 2010.

Matthias Bucher began their education at ETH Zürich in 2006, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnologie. Matthias completed this program in 2009. Following their bachelor's degree, Bucher continued their studies at ETH Zürich and obtained a Master of Science degree in Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnologie in 2011. After completing their master's, they went on to pursue a Doctor of Science degree in Electric Power Systems at ETH Zürich, which they achieved in 2016. Additionally, in 2015, Bucher attended the University of Washington as a researcher, focusing on Power System Economics.
