Tanel Hiir has over 25 years of work experience. Tanel currently serves as a Principal Software Engineer at Starship Technologies, starting in June 2022. Prior to this, they worked at Lingvist, where they held the positions of Technical Fellow from April 2021 to May 2022, and CTO from February 2014 to April 2021. Tanel also worked at Microsoft as a Principal Architect from September 2012 to March 2014, and as a Principal Development Manager from October 2011 to August 2012. Before that, they served as a Development Manager at Skype from May 2005 to October 2011. Tanel's career began at Uptime OU, where they co-founded the company in May 1995 and worked until May 2005.

Tanel Hiir obtained a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in CAD/CAM, from TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, where they studied from 1990 to 1998. In 1996-1997, they also studied CAD/CAM at Hochschule Bielefeld, and from 1993 to 1995, they pursued CAD/CAM studies at the University of Oulu.
