Ian Townley has held various roles in the science and education fields since 2008. In 2008, they were an Instructor and Adjunct Professor at the University of New Orleans, where they taught courses such as Form and Function, Cellular Physiology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Contemporary Biology, and Developmental Biology. From 2010 to 2012, they were the Core Manager and a Research Associate at Xavier University of Louisiana. In this role, they supervised staff researchers, oversaw the research budget, and managed all billing. From 2012 to 2013, they were a Sales Representative at BioMedical Solutions, Inc. In 2013, they began working at Saint George's School as the Science Department Chair and Biology Teacher. During this time, they were also responsible for managing the budget to support all equipment and resources needs. In 2017, they became the Director at SquidBooks, where their duties included being a content manager for science writers, editors, and educators, and ensuring alignment of content with NGSS standards. That same year, they were awarded the Duren Professorship at Tulane University, where they developed an "Introductory Bioinformatics" course. In 2020, they returned to Saint George's School as the Science Department Chair and Teacher.
Ian Townley received their Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Biology, General from Lewis & Clark College between 1997 and 2001. Ian then went on to pursue a PhD in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from UC Santa Barbara, which they completed in 2008.
