David P. Welch

Senior Research Engineer at SP3

David P. Welch has a diverse work experience in the field of seismic engineering. David P. started their career as a Research Assistant at the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (SEESL) in 2009. David P. then worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Graduate School for Understanding and Managing Extremes (UME School) from 2014-2015, where they taught courses on seismic design and conducted tutorials on nonlinear analysis.

In 2012, David worked as an Earthquake Engineer and Doctoral Researcher at the UME School, focusing on non-structural elements in contemporary performance-based earthquake engineering. David P. also contributed to multi-university projects in Italy and the European Union, investigating uncertainty in ground motion and displacement-based design of frame structures.

From 2014-2018, David worked as a Consultant at the Applied Technology Council, leading a pilot study on retrofit options for timber cripple walls in residential homes. David P. utilized specialized finite element software to analyze timber buildings.

David then joined Stanford University in 2017 as a Post-Doctoral Researcher, where they collaborated on a multi-university project evaluating the benefits of seismic retrofitting in single-family wood dwellings.

Most recently, since 2020, David has been working as a Senior Research Engineer at Haselton Baker Risk Group. David P. has been involved in building-specific seismic performance assessment and developing nonlinear models for different structure types.

Throughout their career, David has demonstrated expertise in numerical modeling, nonlinear analysis, and seismic design and assessment.

David P. Welch obtained their Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University at Buffalo, where they studied from 2006 to 2010. David P. then pursued further education at the UME School, Istituto Universitario Superiori di Studi di Pavia, where they obtained a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Earthquake Engineering from 2010 to 2012. David later completed their education at the same institution, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Earthquake Engineering from 2012 to 2016.
