Jay Russell has held various roles in the scientific field, starting as a Postdoctoral Researcher at MIT from 2009 to 2011. Jay then worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Johns Hopkins University from 2011 to 2014. After that, they joined Intrexon Corporation as a Scientist II from 2014 to 2015. Jay then moved to Merck where they worked as a Sr. Scientist from 2016 to 2019. Following their time at Merck, they joined BioGX as a Molecular Genetics specialist from 2019 to 2022. Currently, they are working as the Associate Director of Scientific Development at Southern Research, starting in October 2022.

Jay Russell attended The University of Southern Mississippi from 1998 to 2001. Jay obtained a B.S. degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry during this time. Following that, from 2003 to 2009, Jay Russell pursued a Doctorate of Philosophy at Penn State University, specializing in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
