Karen Magnuson has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of journalism and education. Karen is currently serving as the Project Director for the Solutions Journalism Network. Prior to this, they worked as the Executive In Residence at the Saunders College of Business at RIT, where they mentored and advised students on navigating and managing change.
Karen has a long-standing career in journalism, having held various editorial positions. Karen was the Editor & Vice President/News at the Democrat and Chronicle, where they led a talented newsroom and upheld their responsibility to be watchdogs for the community. Karen also served as the Managing Editor at The Wichita Eagle and held the position of Editor at Valley Times in Pleasanton, CA and Oxnard Press-Courier.
Karen started their career as a journalist at United Press International, where they worked as a Reporter, Bureau Manager, and Regional Executive. Karen also worked at the Daily News of Los Angeles, holding positions such as Regional Editor, Educational Services Manager, and Neighbors Editor. Karen played a key role in advancing education in Los Angeles schools by working with teachers to utilize newspapers as an educational tool.
Karen began their career as a City Editor at the Sturgis Daily Journal. Throughout their career, Karen has consistently demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to quality journalism.
Karen Magnuson completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism at Alma College from 1974 to 1978. Karen then pursued a Master of Science degree in innovation management at Saunders College of Business in Rochester Institute of Technology from 2010 to 2012.
