Marian Serna has a diverse work experience. They have worked at Skyline Group of Companies since 2023 as the Director of Privacy and Data Security. Prior to that, they were a Senior Associate at MUFG Investor Services from 2021 to 2022, where they gained experience in operationalizing data protection programs on a global level. They also worked as a Lawyer at Privada Law from June 2021 to November 2021. In 2020, Marian was part of the LPP Program at Ontario Tech University, where they assisted in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating technology and intellectual property agreements. From 2019 to 2020, they worked at Ample Organics as an IT Contract Manager and Project Manager, leading the creation and implementation of the first National Cannabis Tracking System. Prior to that, Marian co-founded a software development agency and worked as a Web Developer from 2015 to 2018. They started their career as a Lawyer, working as a judicial clerk and in private practice, before transitioning to become a licensed paralegal and eventually pursuing a career in programming and technology law.
Marian Serna has an extensive education history spanning multiple fields of study. Their educational journey begins with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Universidad de Antioquia, which they completed from 2003 to 2009. In 2013, Marian pursued a post-diploma program in Paralegal studies at Centennial College.
In 2013, Marian also obtained an International Business Certificate from the University of Toronto - University College. This certificate focused on the field of international trade. They further expanded their skill set by completing a Multimedia Design & Development program at Humber College from 2015 to 2017, specializing in web development, animation, interactive technology, and video.
In 2017, Marian attended General Assembly Canada to obtain a Web Developer certification, focusing on information technology. They continued to enhance their IT expertise by completing an IT Project Management program at Seneca Polytechnic from 2018 to 2019.
In the field of law, Marian pursued the Osgoode Certificate in Privacy Law & Cybersecurity from York University - Osgoode Hall Law School in 2021. They also obtained a Certified Data Protection Officer certification from Maastricht University in the same year. Marian further enhanced their knowledge in privacy by completing a Privacy by Design program at Ryerson University in 2021.
To specialize further in data protection, Marian pursued an Advanced Master in Data Protection, Cybersecurity, and Data Management from Maastricht University, starting in 2022 and expected to be completed in 2024. They have also obtained additional certifications, including the Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) from the International Association of Privacy Professionals in September 2019, and an International Organizations Management certificate from Coursera Verified Certificates in December 2014.
