Joan X. Comella's work experience includes several notable positions. They currently hold the role of R&D Director at Barcelona Children's Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, starting in October 2022. In 2018, they became a Member of the Advisory Council at the Centre per a la integració de la Medicina i les Tecnologies Innovadores (CIMTI), as well as a Member of the Board of Trustees at ICREA - Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats and Biocat, BioRegion of Catalonia. From 2007 to the present, they have served as a Full Professor of Cell Biology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Additionally, they held the role of Secretari de l’Associacio de centres de recerca de Catalunya (Acer) at Acer from 2017 to 2022 and Director - CEO at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) - Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca from 2009 to 2022. Other positions include being a Vocal at CataloniaBio & HealthTech from 2019 to 2022 and Professor of the Master on Economy of the Science and Innovation (MESI) at Barcelona Graduate School of Economics from 2008 to 2013. They previously served as Director - CEO at Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI) from 2007 to 2009.

Joan X. Comella earned a PhD in Cell Biology - Neuroscience from Universitat de Barcelona from 1987 to 1989. Additionally, Comella received a PADE from IESE Business School in 2011. Joan X. also obtained another PhD from CNRS in 1988 to 1989. Furthermore, Comella attained a degree in Medicine and Surgery from Universitat de Barcelona from 1982 to 1987.
