Andrew is a materials scientist and device engineer. Since graduating with a PhD from the University of Wollongong, Andrew has 20 years’ experience in materials, device and technology innovation and engineering. Notably, he secured prestigious fellowships at the Max-Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Trinity College Dublin and on return to Australia, a QEII Research Fellowship where Andrew designed materials and interfaces for energy applications, adaptive sensing and electronic communication devices. Andrew has gained extensive knowledge of intelligent materials and systems, the ability to control and understand charge over a range of length scales and the knowledge of integrating those materials into real-world devices.
As Director of The Laboratory for Sustainable Technology, at the University of Sydney (2011-2018), Andrew was involved in the design and implementation of industrial scale processes for the development of hydrogen systems and wider energy applications. This included the direct  involvement in early-stage concept and development, scale-up and pilot plant deployment for  both Zenogen  and Hazer Group.   Andrew has both a wide technological and entrepreneurial network, published widely and recognised internationally within his fields of expertise. He has a track record in raising project funds (>$30M) and delivering engineering projects. He has collaborated and consulted to a range of industry partners, including tech companies; Hazer Group, Gelion & Zenogen (Australia), Intel (Europe), Media Lab (Europe), Dow Chemical (US) and Cap-XX Australia and a range of funding bodies both government and private.
