Ayanda Shabalala has a diverse work experience in the mining and metallurgy industry. They started their career as a Trainee Metallurgist at Namakwa Sands in 2007 and gained basic metallurgical knowledge and skills. They then moved on to Anglo Platinum, where they worked as a Metallurgist, focusing on pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and minerals processing.

Shabalala joined Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium in 2012 as a Process Development Metallurgist. After two years, they transitioned to Richards Bay Minerals, where they held various roles including Technical Superintendent and Operations Manager, overseeing processes related to mineral separation plant, slag, site logistics, feed, haulage, and tailings treatment plant.

In 2019, Shabalala joined Sibanye-Stillwater as an Operations Manager, responsible for surface operations. They later became the Vice President - Surface Operations (Acting) before assuming the role of Vice President & Head Of Surface Operations in 2022. They carry a 3.1 legal appointment as per the MHSA and report directly to the Managing Director and Vice President: Surface Operations at Sibanye-Stillwater.

Ayanda Shabalala's education history includes a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Stellenbosch Business School in 2017-2018. Prior to that, Ayanda participated in the Rio Tinto DFL (Developing Future Leaders) Program at an undisclosed institution in 2015. In 2013-2014, Ayanda received a BSc Honors in Applied Metallurgy - Pyrometallurgy from the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria. In 2009-2010, Ayanda completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Minerals Processing at the University of Cape Town. Ayanda's undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Chemical Engineering, was earned at Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2005-2008. Finally, Ayanda completed secondary education at Hope High School, receiving a Matric certificate in 2000-2004 with a focus on Maths, Physics, Accounting, Biology, Zulu, and English.
