Gerard Smook has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Gerard started their career as a Manufacturing Assistant at Thomassen & Drijver Verblifa Leeuwarden in 1984. Gerard then joined Philips Lighting Roosendaal in 1985, where they held various roles such as Quality Manager, Improvement Manager, and Quality System Manager. At Philips Healthcare, they served as the Sr. Manager Quality Systems and QMS Manager iXR. Later, they worked as a Quality Consultant at Strukton Rail, where they were responsible for harmonizing processes. Most recently, they held the position of Lead Auditor at TÃœV Nederland and SGS.

Gerard Smook obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Sciences in 1984 and a Bachelor's Degree in Quality Engineering Sciences in 1993 from HTS Mechanical Engineering and HTS Quality Engineering. Gerard also completed a Prince2 Foundation and Practitioner program at KPMG in 2011, a Purchasing Controls and Supply Chain Management program at AAMI in 2010, and a Quality System Requirements and Industry Practice program at AAMI in 2009. In addition, they earned an Associate's Degree in VCA VOL (operational safety) from Markizaat College in 2002. Gerard received certifications as an Internal Auditor in OHSAS 180001 Occupational Health and Safety from KPMG in 1998, as well as in ISO 14001 Environmental Management System from KPMG in 1995. Gerard graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Quality Engineering Sciences from HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Hogeschool Utrecht) in 1993. Gerard also completed an Internal Auditor program in ISO 9001 Quality Management System from KDI - Kwaliteitsdienst voor de Industrie in 1991, and a Bachelor's Degree in Statistical Analyst A from Stichting Opleidingen Statistiek in 1990. Furthermore, they received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from HTS Leeuwarden in 1984. Finally, Gerard completed the Lead auditor training ISO 9001:2015 program at DNV GL (V-KAM Education) in 2017 and obtained a CQI-IRCA erkend certificaat.
