Omar Yaqub has a diverse work experience spanning several industries and organizations. Omar began their career as a Business Consultant/ IT Specialist for the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture in 2004. Omar successfully built a support network for NGOs and private enterprises and developed solutions for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
In 2006, Yaqub joined Vestergaard Frandsen as a Project Coordinator. Omar implemented a unique marketing and adult education strategy to combat malaria and sell anti-malaria bed-nets. Omar'swork received recognition from CNN, Global TV, and other media outlets.
Yaqub then served as the Director of Operations for the Social Enterprise Fund from 2008 to 2009. Omar played a key role in establishing organizational policies, branding, and marketing strategies. Omar also developed and marketed an acclaimed 8-hour series on social enterprise.
In 2009, Yaqub launched SustainableWorks, a social enterprise focused on creating green collar jobs, reducing carbon emissions, and making utilities more affordable through eco-retrofits. Omar established the organization's infrastructure and collaborated with various stakeholders, including industry, unions, government, churches, and citizens.
Yaqub's next role was Manager at Edmonton Economic Development Corp. from 2010 to 2014. Omar achieved the highest level of external funding in five years and initiated large multi-disciplinary projects. Omar also established partnerships with industry, academia, unions, non-profits, and different levels of government.
From 2014 to 2019, Yaqub co-founded and served as a Senior Partner at ALIF Partners, a management consulting firm. Omar led a team of 15+ people and developed the firm's research and change management methodology. Omar worked on projects such as guiding principles and community foundations for Clark Builders.
In 2008, Yaqub joined the University of Alberta as a Lecturer and taught courses on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Ethics, Social Entrepreneurship, and Corporate Sustainability. Omar focused on preparing business students to drive positive social change in both for-profit and non-profit sectors.
Recently, Yaqub joined Servus Credit Union in 2021 as a Corporate Director. Omar'srole involves strategic leadership and decision-making for the organization.
Most recently, Yaqub has been serving as a Servant of Servants at the Islamic Family and Social Services Association (IFSSA) since 2018.

Omar Yaqub has a diverse education history. Omar holds an ICD.D degree in Corporate Governance from the University of Toronto - Rotman School of Management, which they obtained from 2021 to 2022. In addition, they pursued a Doctor of Sacred Letters (honoris causa) from St. Stephen's College at the University of Alberta, starting in 2021. Previously, they completed an MBA with a specialization in Technology Commercialization from the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta, from 2002 to 2004. For their undergraduate studies, Omar received a BSc in Computing Science with a Minor in Mathematical Science from the University of Alberta between 1996 and 2002. To enhance their skills in board governance, they participated in the Government of Alberta's Board Development Program in 2014-2015.
