Brian E. Howard

Senior Data Scientist at Sciome

Brian E. Howard has had a long and varied career in software engineering and data science. Brian E. began their career in 1995 at Sentient Systems as a Software Engineer and Consultant, where they worked with two other programmers to design and implement a Windows application using Visual C++. In 1996, they moved to GRCI, where they worked with one other programmer to completely rewrite and add new functionality to two older Visual C++ programs, porting from 16-bit to 32-bit Windows in the process.

In 1998, they joined SoftDent LLC (formerly Dentsply/Infosoft) as a Senior Software Engineer, where they served as the primary engineer to design and implement a treatment plan presentation tool that was the centerpiece feature for a major release of the product. Brian E. also used Visual C++ to develop various graphical user-interface components for SoftDent's scheduler module.

In 2001, they moved to Campbell and Company as a Research Programmer and Senior Software Engineer. Brian E. used a combination of Borland C++ and MATLAB to implement, test, and maintain mathematical models of futures markets that were originally designed by PhD researchers at Campbell. Brian E. also worked with a team to develop "RiskTracker," an internal application that is run daily to assess current market exposure.

In 2009, they joined North Carolina State University as a Post-Doctoral Researcher, where they were the lead bioinformatics scientist for several high-profile DOE and NSF biofuels projects. Brian E.'sresponsibilities included RNA-Seq analysis of non-model plants, development and implementation of bioinformatics pipelines, and statistics and informatics support.

In 2012, they joined Sciome LLC as a Senior Data Scientist, where they specialized in developing and deploying novel bioinformatics and chemoinformatics solutions for researchers in the government, academic and private sector organizations. Brian E. also used high throughput technologies to study genomes, proteomes, and metabolomes.

Brian E. Howard has had a long and successful career in software engineering and data science.

Brian E. Howard completed their Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Biology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 1995. Brian E. then went on to obtain their Master's degree in Computer Science from The Johns Hopkins University in 2003. In 2009, they earned their PhD in Bioinformatics from North Carolina State University.
